In Remembrance: Ralph Simon ’39, ’42PhD Died on October 1 2014

Ralph Simon, 96, died peacefully in his sleep on October 1, 2014, in Fairfax, Virginia, where he was living with his daughter. He was born and raised on the Jersey Shore and earned undergraduate and graduate degrees at Yale University, completing a doctorate in physics in 1942.

He worked for the Army Signal Corps during and after WWII. After teaching at Penn State, he moved to Columbus, Ohio, to work for Battelle Memorial Research Institute, where he remained for 25 years, retiring early to form his own consulting firm. He was an activist in the Civil Rights and anti-war movements during the 1960s and ’70s, and gifted his papers from that era to the Ohio Historical Society.

He is survived by his spouse of 60 years, Maria Eugenia Peralta Simon; daughter Marcella Simon of Fairfax, Virginia; brother Edward Simon of Derry, New Hampshire;  son Robert Simon of London, England; and four grandchildren.
