In Remembrance: William J. Alford III ’37 Died on December 4 2014

William (Bill) John Alford III, age 99, passed away at Englewood Hospital on December 4, 2014, after a brief illness.  He had been residing in his home in Englewood, New Jersey.

Bill was born to Irilla Frye Alford and Willliam John Alford Jr. in Bogota, New Jersey.  He was husband to the late Susan Stewart Alford, who predeceased him in 1990. Bill is survived by his second wife, Henriette Brooks, his son, Walter Stewart Alford, his daughter, Susan Alford Pozdena, nine grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren.  His eldest son, William John Alford IV, predeceased him in 2013.  

Bill was a longtime resident of Englewood, where he served on the Englewood School Board, the Englewood Rotary Club, Community Chess, Englewood Community Foundation, Englewood Club, and Dwight Englewood School Board, among other organizations.  He had been a longtime summer resident of Norfolk, Connecticut, where he served on the boards of the Doolittle Lake Company Board and the Ellen Battell Stoeckel Estate.

In his professional life Bill was president of Alford Cartons and Continental Paper Company. He was active in industry organizations. He was a graduate of the Hill School in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, and Yale University.  

Bill was a gregarious individual, and a force for social reform.  He enjoyed getting people together to grapple with various issues.  He had a great interest in improving the lives of young Englewood school-aged children.  He was an avid reader with an impressive memory and analytical mind.  He was fortunate to have enjoyed the full power of these faculties until his death.
