In Remembrance: Sigourney F. Nininger Jr. ’45 Died on April 24 2015

Sigourney F. Nininger Jr. died on April 24, 2015, at his retirement home in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, after a brief illness. Born in White Plains, New York, in 1923, he attended Bronxville High School, Holderness School, and graduated from Lawrenceville School in 1941. After graduating from Yale he was employed for several years by publishing and engineering firms in New York and Washington before becoming self-employed as a manufacturer's representative in Fairfield, Connecticut, serving Connecticut industry. He was a member of the Graduate Club in New Haven, the Black Rock Yacht Club, and the Fayerweather Yacht Club. He served on the board of the New Haven Preservation Trust and was a governor of the Society of Colonial Wars in Connecticut. While governor he established the first web page devoted exclusively to informing young school children about the very early history of America. Mr. Nininger's passion for sailing led him to participate in races on Long Island Sound as well as waters in Maine and Lake Champlain. He is survived by his brother, Richard A. Nininger of Brooklyn, New York; his beloved wife of 51 years, Betsy Waltman Day; two sons, Richard B. Day and Stewart G. Day and their wives, Courtney Day and Susan Day; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Burial was held in Chapel Hill and a memorial service will be held in August on the beach in Maine.
