Johnson, the Drucilla Moore Buffington Professor of Church History, emeritus, at Vanderbilt University, died on August 10, 2014, after a battle with colon cancer. He was 78. A Rhodes Scholar, Johnson held degrees from Colgate and Oxford Universities, the Lutheran School of Theology, and the Union Theological Seminary.
