After graduating from Yale Law School in 1949, Lazarus went on to become an expert in indigenous law. Lazarus represented the Sioux Nation in his most famous case in which the Court of Claims compensated the tribe over $100 million dollars for the illegal seizure of their land. Lazarus also advocated for the rights of indigenous people in front of the Supreme Court in effort to stop Robert Moses and the New York Power Authority to stop development on the Tuscarora Nation's Land.
