I had the good fortune to meet Horace in Vienna, during his time there researching the natural horn. Although the early history took place in Bohemia, he preferred to travel there, and live in Vienna. His enthusiasm and expertise infected a number of Viennese hornists and other musicians, which culminated in a performace of the Brandenburg Concerti including natural horns and unvalved trumpets ( Helmut Wobisch of the Vienna Phil joined in) and Hanoncourt friends on old strings, before their orchestra Conzentus Musikus was formed.
He enthused me to become interested and part of my Harvard AM was a paper on the natural horn. Horace of course became the world authority.
