ObituariesIn Remembrance: Frederick (Jerry) Darnell ’50 Died on September 23 2021Frederick (Jerry) Darnell died peacefully on September 23 at his home on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa with a BS physics degree from Yale, and received his PhD physics degree in 1955 from Carnegie Mellon University. He married Elaine in 1952 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He joined the DuPont Company in Wilmington, Delaware, in their central research group, where he had a successful science research career for 34 years, retiring as director of analytical and information sciences. He was a member of Sigma Xi and active in the American Physical Society. He moved to Hilton Head Island in 1989, and stayed active in doubles tennis, and as a USTA umpire. He participated in the Hilton Head Yacht Club and served as commodore in 1994. He earned the rank of senior navigator with full certificate in the US Sail and Power Squadrons, and taught celestial navigation courses for the Hilton Head Squadron. He volunteered as a tutor with the local Literacy Association. He worked with Volunteers in Medicine for 17 years, and also volunteered with the Hilton Head Hospital Auxiliary. He served on his community finance committee and on the Regime Board, and enjoyed the challenges of six-wicket croquet. Surviving are sons Stephen (Yale BA 1976) and Gregory (Princeton BS 1978) and granddaughter Claire. He was preceded in death by wife Elaine and daughter Katherine. —Submitted by the family. |
