Shepherd, professor emeritus in the Department of Neuroscience at Yale School of Medicine, died on June 9, 2022, at the age of 88. He had been at Yale for more than 50 years, joining the faculty in 1967, and was a "major and passionate contributor to our knowledge of brain synaptic organization, and the mechanisms of olfaction in particular," according to this tribute on the medical school's website.
