Maggie taught a seminar I took senior year on Yeats, Eliot, and Stevens. She was calmly brilliant, a generous and challenging mentor to her students. We learned so much from her. To me she epitomized what I loved most about Yale: the sense that intellectual curiosity is a life-giving force. I wish I could have talked with her later in life, to find out how she looked back at those years. Having so recently earned her doctorate, she would have I imagine much to say about the powerful intellectual, political, and institutional currents transforming the academic world in the 1970s and 80s. Mostly though, I wish I could thank her.
