He retired in 1984 as vice president of one of the world's largest nickel mining companies, for which he had developed a billion-dollar mining and smelting operation in Indonesia. After his retirement, Philip was recruited by the National Gallery of Art where he worked for 16 years as board secretary and general counsel.
