He was a graduate of Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts, and Yale University. During World War II, Gordon served as a private first class in the Army in the European Theater. After the war, he moved to Rochester, New York, where he had a lifetime career as a successful insurance executive, avid tennis player, golfer, reader, and traveler.
