As a young man, he embraced both service and adventure; he worked at a mission hospital in Ghana, volunteered in Mexico for the American Friends Service Committee, and sailed to Quebec and Labrador for the Grenfell Mission. From 1970 to 1972, he served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed at McMurdo Station, Antarctica, as a flight surgeon for Operation Deep Freeze. The Richmond Times-Dispatch published his full obituary on September 25, 2013.
