Community news and awards

It’s been a busy time for School of Art faculty, alums, and students!

Maria De Los Angeles ’15MFA, critic and assistant director in painting/printmaking, was commissioned to paint two murals in her hometown of Santa Rosa, California, at the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts. The second mural, Four Seasons: A Celebration of Community and Environmental Beauty, resulted from two weeks of workshops with more than 100 community members. De Los Angeles’s work is also featured in a new solo exhibition at the center entitled The Garden of Dreams, open through January 2024.

Director of graduate studies in graphic design Nontsikelelo Mutiti ’12MFA created the graphic identity for the 35th São Paulo Bienal—entitled choreographies of the impossible and open through December 10 in São Paulo, Brazil—producing the art direction for the website, all signage, and designing the Bienal’s official poster, while also featuring work in the exhibition.

Senior critic Sarah Oppenheimer was recently recognized with a 2023 NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship in Craft/Sculpture. And just last week, first-year MFA student in sculpture Nic[o] Brierre Aziz was announced as a 2023 Artist2Artist Fellow, an Art Matters Foundation award through which the grant recipients—artists—act as grantmakers.

In alum honors, Anna Boyiazis ’91MFA has been awarded the Michel du Cille Fellowship from the National Press Photographers Foundation. Nathaniel Donnett ’21MFA has been named the Brown Foundation Houston Region Affiliated Fellow for the Rome Prize, and he’ll be in residence at the American Academy in Rome from March through May 2024. And Rebecca Soderholm ’07MFA is one of five artists recognized with a 2023 JGS Fellowship for Photography from the New York Foundation for the Arts.
