Celebrating School of Art alumnae

In October, Dean Kymberly Pinder celebrated three strong women alum legends at events from New York to Düsseldorf.

First, she joined former students and admirers of Professor Sheila Levrant de Bretteville ’64MFA at Pratt Institute in New York, where Yale’s Robert B. Haas Family Arts Library announced that her archives are now in their collection.

The following week the dean joined Byron Kim ’83 and Lisa Sigal ’89MFA to fete Sheila Hicks ’59MFA at two openings hosted for the Sheila Hicks exhibition held in both the Josef Albers Museum Quadrat Bottrop and the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf. The galleries in the Albers Museum surveyed her lifetime of work and included an entire room of paintings and drawings she did at Yale, with photographs of her in class with her mentor Josef Albers, former chair of the design department at what was then the Yale School of Art and Architecture.

Finally, Dean Pinder sat with alumni, recent and otherwise, at the Skowhegan gala as the organization honored Howardena Pindell ’67MFA. And she adds a shout-out to former dean and Professor Marta Kuzma, whose book History of an Art School underscores the importance of these alumnae in the history of SoA.
