Summer projects and “Making Do”

Two exhibitions this semester in the gallery at Holcombe T. Green Hall provided feasts for the eyes as well as food for thought.

School’s In, which was on view from September 19 through October 6, showcased work created during the summer by undergraduate art majors and students of the Norfolk Summer School of Art. This is art created for its own sake, rather than for a class, an assignment, or a thesis, according to Assistant Dean Samuel Messer; students are given the chance to find their own audience—something they will need to do as they enter the professional art world.

Following School’s In, as part of the university-wide Celebrate Sustainability week during October, the school mounted Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock—the 2014 “Making Do” project that invited members of the Yale community to submit a work of art made from recycled materials, or a poem, performance, or idea relevant to the topic of sustainability. Rock, Paper, Scissors, Lizard, Spock was on view through October 30.
