Longtime professor passes away

The School of Art is saddened to report the passing of Robert James Reed Jr. ’62MFA, a member of the school’s Department of Painting and Printmaking for nearly 50 years, who died December 26 at the age of 76. Reed joined the faculty in 1969 as professor of painting and printmaking, and served at various times as director of undergraduate studies in art, director of graduate studies in painting, and director of the Summer School of Music and Art. Dean Robert Storr called Reed a “beloved mentor of generations of young talent who benefited from and valued his ‘tough love’ pedagogy.” The school has established a scholarship fund in Reed’s name; donations to the Robert Reed Scholarship Fund (made payable to Yale School of Art) may be sent to Monica Robinson, School of Art Office of Development, Box 2038, New Haven, CT 06521-2038. A memorial will be held at the 32 Edgewood Gallery on April 11.

Exhibition explores the bizarre

The current exhibition at the school’s 32 Edgewood Gallery focuses on the history of the American side show and its intersection with fine art. More than 70 works from 29 artists are featured in Side Show, including pieces from Diane Arbus, Otto Dix, and John Waters, and ranging from the mid-eighteenth century to the present. On display are original side show banners, promotional cards, photographs, historical pieces, and carnival-inspired works of art. Panel discussions, lectures, workshops, and performances complement the exhibition. Side Show is on view through March 20.
