New dean at the School of Art

The next dean of the Yale School of Art will be Marta Kuzma, vice chancellor and rector of the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, Sweden, who will take the helm when Dean Robert Storr steps down on July 1. She will be the first woman to lead the school since its opening in 1869.

Kuzma comes to Yale with more than 25 years of experience as a curator and academic, including as director of the Office for Contemporary Art Norway; founding director of the Soros Center for Contemporary Art in Kiev, Ukraine; artistic director of the Washington Project for the Arts in Washington, DC; and head of the international exhibitions program at the International Center of Photography in New York City. She is visiting professor at two universities in Italy, and has led Sweden’s Royal Institute since 2014. Kuzma was born in New Jersey and holds a BA from Barnard College and an MA in aesthetics and art theory from the Centre for Research in Modern European Philosophy at Middlesex University in London.

In announcing the appointment, Yale president Peter Salovey ’86PhD called Kuzma an “independent and creative thinker with a track record of making deep connections to students and faculty,” who “recognizes the importance of new sensibilities and new contexts for the presentation of artists and art.”

Dean Storr, who has been dean since 2006, will take a sabbatical next year before returning to Yale as a member of the faculty.
