Development director retires

Following 24 years of service to Yale University, Deborah Berman has retired from her position as senior director of development and alumni affairs at David Geffen School of Drama and Yale Repertory Theatre.

As the first full-time director in this role, Berman amassed transformative and unprecedented achievements. She was instrumental in establishing more than 75 named scholarships for students and in securing support from the David Geffen Foundation to make students’ attendance here tuition-free. She brought donors aboard to underwrite educational programming in the community as well as for international study and vital curricular and equipment enhancement, among many other priorities. In the current Yale capital campaign, Berman led her team to raise more than $350 million, including funds that will enable the university to build the new Dramatic Arts Building to house the Geffen School and provide support to the Yale Rep; the Faculty of Arts and Sciences’ program in theater, dance, and performance studies; and the Yale Dramatic Association.

“Deborah Berman’s legacy will be felt on campus, and in the field, for generations to come,” said Elizabeth Parker Ware Dean and Artistic Director James Bundy ’95MFA, who also retired from his positions on June 30. “Of special note is Deborah’s long and successful partnership with the school’s Board of Advisors, whose invaluable wisdom and support have made possible every major initiative undertaken at the Geffen School and Yale Rep over the past two decades. Her genuine warmth, broad interests, and tireless investment in the happiness and success of others have enabled generations of her friends and colleagues to benefit from her fine company and subtle leadership.”
