Professor honored for lifetime of work
Sterling Professor of Law and Political Science Bruce Ackerman ’67LLB has been awarded the 2026 Tang Prize in Rule of Law. The prize selection committee said that Ackerman’s lifetime of work has “inspired constitutional lawyers around the world in their pursuit of social justice and the rule of law.” The prize is awarded biennially in four categories to recipients who have made substantive contributions and generated a far-reaching impact on the world, regardless of race, nationality, gender, or religion. Ackerman receives the award in Taipei on September 18 and will participate in a discussion on his lifetime contributions.
Supreme Court cites professor’s work
Scholarship by Alfred M. Rankin Professor of Law Abbe R. Gluck ’96, ’00JD, was cited in three recent Supreme Court opinions. In one case, Gluck’s 2013 article, “Statutory Interpretation from the Inside,” was cited in both the majority opinion and in the dissent. The same article was cited by Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson in a separate case challenging the government’s tariffs policy. Gluck was also cited in the dissent of a 6–3 ruling that a former prisoner, whose head was forcibly shaved, violating his religious freedoms, could not sue the prison guards responsible.
First Amendment lawyer joins faculty
John Langford ’14JD joined the Law School faculty on July 1 as clinical associate professor of law. Langford was a visiting clinical associate professor of law at the Law School during the 2025–26 academic year and was counsel at Protect Democracy from 2019 to 2024. As a nationally esteemed lawyer, he focuses primarily on issues related to the First Amendment, news gathering, free expression, and dignitary torts. Dean Cristina M. Rodríguez ’95, ’00JD, wrote that Langford “works tirelessly to ensure that students receive the mentorship and acquire the skills and critical capacities they need to thrive in the legal profession.”
