Dean elected to Academy of Arts and Sciences
Kerwin K. Charles, the Indra K. Nooyi Dean and Frederic D. Wolfe Professor of Economics, Policy, and Management at Yale SOM, was elected a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in April. Charles has been widely recognized for his scholarship on earnings and wealth inequality, conspicuous consumption, race and gender labor-market discrimination, and other microeconomic issues.
Two faculty members appointed to named chairs
In April Yale SOM celebrated the appointment of two senior faculty members to named chairs. Katja Seim ’01PhD was named the inaugural Sharon Oster Professor of Economics and Management, with a joint appointment at SOM and the Department of Economics; and Deborah Small was appointed the Adrian C. Israel Professor of Marketing. Both appointments were effective in July 2022.
The Sharon Oster professorship was created in honor of Yale SOM’s longtime faculty member and former dean, with support from alumni of Yale College and Yale SOM as well as faculty and members of the SOM advisory board. Oster passed away in 2022. The Adrian C. Israel Professorship was established by Adrian “Ace” Israel, a longtime leader in finance and a 1936 graduate of Yale College, who passed away in 1991.
Treasury secretary hails program on financial stability
Speaking with Yale president Peter Salovey ’86PhD at Edward P. Evans Hall in April, US treasury secretary Janet Yellen ’71PhD took a moment to express her appreciation of the Yale Program on Financial Stability, led by Yale SOM’s Andrew Metrick ’89, ’89MA.
During a day spent at Yale’s Tobin Center for Economic Policy on April 3, Yellen said, “I also feel passionate about the work of the Program on Financial Stability that Andrew Metrick heads, that is a wonderful resource for those who have to deal with financial crises. I’ve found myself using its resources even in recent days. It’s a tremendous asset to the world’s financial stability community.”
