Global Network meets in Turkey
The Global Network for Advanced Management held a meeting of business school leaders from November 26 to 28 at Koç University in Istanbul, Turkey. The Global Network is a consortium of 22 international business schools, first convened by Yale SOM, that connects faculty, students, and deans with their peers worldwide to improve business education in an increasingly globalized, more competitive world. The Global Network includes institutions in both developed nations and emerging markets. Since the Global Network’s launch in April 2012, member schools have been laying the groundwork to address three core objectives: the co-development of case studies that can be shared among schools; connecting students from different schools; and the potential for joint courses and other projects.
Member schools utilize the network to build out distinctively global programs. Yale SOM, for instance, has enrolled the first class in its new master of advanced management program, which admits exceptional graduates of Global Network schools for a one-year program of study at Yale. In addition, SOM has realigned its International Experience course, a required part of the MBA core curriculum, to include visits to network schools. In the coming year, SOM will kick off a program to host distinguished visiting scholars from Global Network schools, and other network members are organizing extracurricular events to connect students.
A new scholarship for veterans
US Army veteran Christopher Kennedy ’13 has been named SOM’s inaugural Bank of America Scholar. The merit-based scholarship, which was funded by the Bank of America Charitable Foundation, will be awarded annually to one or more honorably discharged US veterans. It is the first endowed scholarship of its kind at SOM. Kennedy graduated in 2006 from the US Military Academy at West Point, where he was the team lead on the pommel horse and vault for the NCAA Division I gymnastics team. After West Point, he was commissioned as an armor officer in the US Army. He served five years on active duty, with positions in Germany, Kuwait, and Iraq and at Fort Knox, Kentucky. He completed his active duty service at the rank of captain just prior to enrolling in Yale’s full-time MBA program in the fall of 2011.
