YSM earns top ranking for research

In its 2026 rankings, US News & World Report named Yale School of Medicine one of the best medical schools in the United States for research. The outlet ranks schools in four tiers, and YSM achieved Tier 1 status, given to the highest-performing medical schools.

US News & World Report ranked 105 medical and osteopathic schools for its “Best Medical Schools: Research” category. For its rankings, it takes into account the total dollar amount of research grants and contracts, total research funding per faculty member, the amount of National Institutes of Health (NIH) research grant funding at the medical school and its affiliated hospitals, and average NIH research grant dollars per faculty member. It also considers median MCAT scores, median undergraduate GPAs, acceptance rate, and faculty/student ratio.

Study will investigate menopause-related brain changes

Irina Esterlis and Robert Pietrzak, professors of psychiatry at Yale School of Medicine, have been awarded a $4.2 million grant from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) to investigate how menopause affects brain function, mood, and cognition.

The study will be the first to examine in living people how menopause-related changes in brain synaptic density may contribute to a higher risk for depression and cognitive problems in midlife females. It will use advanced positron emission tomography (PET) scans to measure the number of connections between brain cells by tracking a protein called synaptic vesicle glycoprotein 2A (SV2A), which shows how healthy these connections are.

“Ultimately, this study seeks to identify a modifiable neurobiological target to inform the development of novel interventions that improve mental health and cognitive outcomes in midlife and older females worldwide,” Esterlis said.
