Architecture award for Morse and Stiles

Morse and Ezra Stiles are the twin Cinderellas of Yale's residential college system, long mocked by their Gothic and Georgian stepsisters for their eccentric modernism but recently transformed by extensive renovations. If there's a fairy godmother in this analogy, it would have to be KieranTimberlake, the Philadelphia architecture firm that reshaped the colleges' single bedrooms into more attractive suites and designed new underground activity spaces for the colleges to share.

Today, the American Institute of Architects announced that the renovation of Morse and Stiles one of 11 national winners of its 2013 Honor Awards for Architecture, one of the profession's highest honors for building projects.

The awards jury gave the project "a thumbs-up for preserving the work of [original architect Eero] Saarinen and exploiting the basement space that was originally less desirable without altering the general impression and character of the project."
