Weekly Sports Roundup (1/14–1/20)

With the winter season in full swing, the Bulldogs had several exciting matches last week. Though there were mixed results across the board, the women's squash team (9–0, 2–0 Ivy) continued its impressive season with four 9–0 victories in three days. The No. 3 Bulldogs topped No. 7 Stanford and No. 12 George Washington on Friday, and went on to defeat No. 11 Middlebury and No. 20 Bowdoin on Sunday.

In other sports news this week (information from Yale Sports Publicity):

Men's Ice Hockey
In one of the most awaited games of the season, the No. 12 Bulldogs (11–4–3, 7–3–1 ECAC) blanked Harvard on Friday night. But the 4–0 victory was just a start: the Bulldogs then defeated No. 11 Dartmouth 4–2. The team travels to Ithaca, N.Y. this weekend for a game against Cornell.

Women's Tennis
The No. 28 Bulldogs opened their season Sunday with a 7–0 win over Delaware State. The team dominated across the board at singles, with all athletes winning their matches in two sets. Madeleine Hamilton ’16 and Annie Sullivan ’14, who played No. 1 and No. 4 in singles, respectively, went on from their 2–0 singles victories to win 8–2 in the No. 1 doubles spot.

Men's Squash
The No. 4 Bulldogs continued a five-match winning streak with victories against No. 5 Rochester and No. 20 Bowdoin this weekend. The team went 6–3 in the first match and 8–1 in the second. The Bulldogs head to Hartford on Wednesday to face off against No. 2 Trinity, one of their strongest opponents of the season.

Women's Basketball
Fresh off a win against Bucknell last week, the Bulldogs (5–10, 0–1 Ivy) defeated Bryant 78–65 in their final non-conference game of the season. But in the Ivy opener, they lost to Brown 68–67. Ivy play continues with another game against Brown this Friday.

Women's Ice Hockey
The Bulldogs (3–15–1, 2–9–1 ECAC) broke a five-game losing streak last week with a 3–2 victory against Brown, but lost 2–1 to the Bears in a rematch two days later. The second game was the fifth one-goal loss for the Bulldogs this season.

Women's Gymnastics
The Bulldogs finished second in a tri-meet against Ithaca and Southern Connecticut on Sunday with a score of 186.350. The team trailed just 0.525 behind first-place Southern Connecticut. Joyce Li ’15 won the all-around competition with a score of 38.375 and Morgan Traina ’15, last season's ECAC Rookie of the Year, won both the beam and the uneven bars, scoring 9.725 on each.

The Bulldogs saw a promising start to Ivy play at a meet against Dartmouth and Columbia on Sunday. The team finished second with 59 points, 18 points behind Dartmouth. They head to the Terrier Invitational in Boston this week.

Women's Track and Field
Though the Bulldogs finished third in the annual tri-meet against Columbia and Dartmouth, several athletes posted impressive results in Coxe Cage on Sunday. Karleh Wilson ’16 set a Yale record with a mighty heave of 45'1.5" (13.75 m) in the shot put, beating the 44'1.25" record set in 2006. Three other Bulldogs set top-ten marks.

Men's Fencing
In its first match in over a month, the Bulldogs fell 13–14 to Sacred Heart at Payne Whitney this weekend. Still, several athletes had strong performances on Saturday. Brian Wang ’16 and Hugh O'Cinneide ’14 each posted 3–0 records and the epee and sabre squads both won a 5–4 verdict.
