Weekly sports roundup (11/18-11/24)

While most students and many alumni were tailgating and attending the Harvard-Yale football game, Kevin Dooney ’16 was racing as Yale's first men's cross country runner to make it to the NCAA nationals in three years. Racing in muddy conditions, Dooney ran the 10K race and came in 98th place among over 250 other runners. His time was 31:18.5. The first-place finisher, Oregon's Edward Cheserek, came in with a time of 29:41.1.

In other sports news this week (information from Yale Sports Publicity):

The football team ended its season with its seventh consecutive loss to Harvard, and its 12th in 13 years. The Bulldogs (5–5, 3–4 Ivy) fell to the Crimson 34–7 before a crowd of 50,000 at the Yale Bowl. The only touchdown came from wide receiver Deon Randall ’15, who has since been elected team captain for the next year. Yale finished tied for fourth place in the Ivy League standings, alongside Brown and Penn. Harvard and Princeton tied for first.

Coming back from a disappointing loss against Columbia last week, the women's swimming and diving team came in first at a meet featuring Sacred Heart and the University of Bridgeport. The Bulldogs beat Bridgeport 100–79 and Sacred Heart 107–76. The Bulldogs have a week off before Ivy League competition resumes with the Princeton Invitational, starting on December 6.

Despite a difficult first day of competition at the Bucknell Invitational this weekend, the men's swimming and diving team bounced back and defended its title by the end of the meet. "We made some mistakes, and had some great races. The swimmers will keep both in mind as they move forward with their training," coach Tim Wise said.

The No. 2 coed sailing team placed fourth at the ICSA Match Racing National Championship at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club, capping off a successful fall season. Captain Chris Segerblom ’14 drove the Yale boat, with crew Marly Isler ’16, Graham Landy ’15, and Max Nickbarg ’14.

The men's ice hockey team, ranked ninth in the nation, ended a seven-game winning streak this weekend. The Bulldogs (5–2–2, 3–1–2 ECAC) defeated Colgate 5–2 early in the week but went on to fall to No. 18 Cornell 2–1 on Saturday. Still, the Bulldogs outshot Cornell 31–29.

Mixed results continue for the men's basketball team. In last Tuesday's game against Sacred Heart, the Bulldogs (2–3, 0–0 Ivy) won with a score of 80–65, and all five starters in the game—Armani Cotton ’15, Javier Duren ’15, Justin Sears ’16, Brandon Sherrod ’16, and Nick Victor ’16—scored double-digit points. Sears went on to score 23 points in a Saturday game against Mercer, but that wasn't enough to keep the Bulldogs from losing 81–54.

A win and a loss, for the women's basketball team: the Bulldogs (3–3, 0–0 Ivy) fell 80–52 to Fordham on Saturday after beating Boston University 78–68 on Tuesday. The Bulldogs hit five three-pointers and shot 44 percent from the field in the BU game.

After scoring the season's first two victories last week, the women's ice hockey team took on the nation's top-ranked team on Saturday and Sunday. No. 1 Minnesota took down the Bulldogs (2–7–1, 2–3–1 ECAC) 5–1 in the first game and 4–1 in the second. In the Sunday game, goaltender Jaimie Leonoff ’15 made 48 saves.
