Hoops are out, tux is in
as Sherrod joins Whiffenpoofs

On the Yale basketball team, Brandon Sherrod ’15 plays forward. But next year, he'll probably find himself standing in the back.

That's because Sherrod decided to take off what would have been his senior year to perform with the Whiffenpoofs, Yale's 115-year-old a cappella singing group. At 6 feet, 6 inches, Sherrod will likely be the tallest of the tuxedoed 14.

In recent years, it's become standard practice for the Whiffs to take a yearlong leave of absence from Yale so they can travel the world. Choosing singing over basketball “was an incredibly hard decision,” Sherrod tells the New Haven Register. “But basketball is not my life. I have a lot of other interests and music is one of them.”

Politics is another: Sherrod eventually hopes to become mayor of his hometown, just down the road from New Haven of Bridgeport.

“Education is a really big issue in Bridgeport," Sherrod told the Connecticut Post last November. “We've had a pretty bad history of mayors,” but “Bridgeport has a lot of potential.”

Sherrod does intend to play basketball as a fifth-year senior in 2015-16. First, though, he's got some singing to do.
