12/3/10: David Carel ’13 & Gregg Gonsalves ’11Yale sophomore David Carel (right) had a brush with fame in October, when he and fellow protesters heckled President Barack Obama at a Connecticut campaign rally with a chant of “Fund Global AIDS!” This week, the spotlight returned in the form of a New York Times article pegged to World AIDS Day and headlined “Colleges Are Producing New Style of AIDS Activist.” Alongside the 19-year-old Carel—who admits that his parents wished he would be “more respectful”—is 47-year-old Gregg Gonsalves ’11 (left), a student in the Eli Whitney Program, fellow Obama protester, and longtime AIDS activist who is HIV-positive. “I used to wonder where the next generation would come from,” Gonsalves told the Times. “They’re here.”
