12/16/11: Davan Maharaj ’95MSLJWhat they teach journalists: “If your mother says she loves you, get a second source.” What they teach at Yale Law School: “If you can make an argument with a straight face, make it.” Davan Maharaj ’95MSLJ, a career journalist who earned a master’s of studies in law at Yale, will likely draw on both sources of wisdom when he steps into his new job as top editor at the Los Angeles Times. Current editor Russ Stanton abruptly resigned this week after four years, three Pulitzer prizes, and newsroom staff cuts of nearly 40 percent. He gave no reason, prompting rumors that more cutbacks loom. The last three editors quit over… cutbacks. "I am humbled and honored to lead one of the most talented and resilient newsrooms in the nation," Maharaj said, apparently with a straight face. "Our commitment to delivering high-quality journalism remains unwavering." The Times’s parent Tribune Company is in bankruptcy. Our advice to Maharaj: if Mother Tribune says she loves you, get a second source.
