Weekly Sports Roundup, 4/29–5/5

The No. 15 men's lacrosse team is going to the NCAA tournament for the second year in a row. This weekend at the Ivy League tournament at Cornell, the Bulldogs beat Penn 9–6 in the semifinal game Friday afternoon, then topped Princeton 12–8 on Sunday to win its second straight postseason Ivy championship. Yale will face No. 9 Penn State in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Saturday.

Also headed for the NCAA Tournament is the No. 37 women's tennis team, which found out on Tuesday that it will play No. 22 Georgia Tech on Saturday in Gainesville, Florida.

As Yale is in the midst of final exams, it was mostly a quiet week, but there was some action in other spring sports (information from Yale Sports Publicity):

Coed sailing

Yale's sailors qualified for the national team championship by placing fourth in the New England Championship at Harvard this weekend, behind Brown, Boston College, and Roger Williams. The team is seeking its third national championship.

Softball

The Bulldogs ended their season with a 6–0 loss to Marist on Tuesday. With a record of 10–37 (5–15 Ivy), the team finished seventh in the Ivy League this year.

Men's track and field

As a team, Yale placed eighth at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championship at Princeton last weekend. The standout performer for the Bulldogs was Mike Levine ’13, who took second place in discus with a personal best of 55.61m and third place in the hammer throw with a season-best 56.67m.

Women's track and field

The Yale women also finished at the rear of the Ivy League at last weekend's Heptagonals. Mackenzie Mathews ’16 broke a Yale record with a 14.44-second time in the 100-meter hurdles, and Alisha Jordan ’15 placed fourth in the triple jump.
