This is what I posted this morning on the Yale '89 Facebook page. I don't know why the editor hasn't resigned -- EW
"I know this space is mostly for Yale cheerleading. But the latest announcements from the university are, to me, disquieting. First, a wasteful $150 million contribution to rename Commons and make it a student center, and second, something I just read today, where the Yale Alumni Magazine will become a "department" of Yale overseen by none other than eternal president-whisperer Linda Lorimer. And everyone quoted in the press release - the editor (who's staying on), and AYA - being excited about this. It's an honor to have an independent alumni magazine; most universities don't, and so they are administration mouthpieces. Is that what we're headed for with YAM?"
I agree that that it is a great loss to no longer have an independent alumni magazine.
