Jake Stoller ’12: A Bulldog becomes a man of steel.
Jake Stoller grew up outside the Rust Belt football town of Cleveland. After a four-year stop in New Haven, the graduating Yale senior is now headed for another Rust Belt football town: Pittsburgh. “Yale is in the house at Steelers headquarters,” crowed David Todd ’87, a Pittsburgh sports-radio personality, after the team signed Stoller as an undrafted free agent last weekend. “I got a little smile out of that. I don’t know that there’s ever been a Yale kid on the Steeler roster.” A 6-foot, 4-inch, 290-pound defensive lineman (or 6–3 and 284, depending on whose stats you believe), Stoller was a second-team All–Ivy League selection last season and earned Yale’s Jordan Olivar Award, reflecting “the highest respect of his teammates,” the Yale football website reports. This weekend, Stoller is participating in a Steelers rookie minicamp, according to the New Haven Register. He’s already got his own page on the official Steelers site. Noting that “we don’t have a lot of guys from Yale playing in the NFL,” alumnus Todd cautioned on his podcast that Stoller might not be around for long. “If I get up to Steeler camp, I’m going to make sure that I have a chat with him very early on, because it might not be that long.” Hey, at least let the kid graduate from college.
