Ali Weiner ’11: Taking steps against slavery.

We’re used to hearing about Yale alumni who turned their student projects into books or movies. Ali Weiner ’11 is going several hundred thousand steps further. After writing a Yale journalism seminar article on human trafficking, she turned the subject into her senior thesis, a fistful of post-graduation fellowships—and now, Freedom to Walk, a 370-kilometer march from Bangkok to Burma.

With co-organizer Tanrak “Tanny” Chiengtong, a Thai law professor, Weiner and her fellow walkers stepped off on November 3. They expect to reach the Burmese border on November 17, by which time they hope to top their goal of raising $100,000 for organizations that combat modern-day slavery.
