Ivy Taylor ’92: Ms. Mayor

When this week started, Ivy Taylor ’92 was just one of ten City Council members in San Antonio, Texas. Tuesday, she became mayor of the nation’s seventh-largest city.

Elected by her fellow council members to fill the seat vacated by Julian Castro, who resigned to become US Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, Taylor made it clear she’s an interim mayor only: she will not run for reelection next May.

The first African American and second woman to serve as San Antonio’s mayor, Taylor brings five years’ experience as a “diligent but mostly quiet” council member, the Express-News says. With a bachelor’s in American Studies from Yale and a master’s in planning from the University of North Carolina, she has worked for housing and neighborhood agencies.

Even without running for reelection, Taylor will face “pressing challenges” in the next ten months, according to the San Antonio Express-News: negotiating a new water pipeline and contracts with the police and fire unions while making sure there’s enough money left in the budget to fix streets and sidewalks and provide social services.

Oh, and she needs to update her Twitter account: at this writing, it still identifies her as District 2 City Council member.
