Sitting in

Students from the group Fossil Free Yale staged a sit-in at Woodbridge Hall yesterday morning to demand that the university consider selling its investments in fossil-fuel companies, a move the university rejected last August. Some 50 students took part in the action at Yale’s central administration building, saying they would not leave until President Peter Salovey ’86PhD and the Yale Corporation “publicly commit to reconsider divestment from fossil fuels and explicitly state why.” Yale Police gave the protesters until five o’clock to leave the building; when they didn’t, 19 were cited for trespassing and fined $92 each.

Note: We originally reported incorrectly that the 19 students were arrested. We regret the error.
