Throwback Thursday: it breaks your heart

The baseball season ended last night for the Boston Red Sox. That means that, according to tradition, radio announcer Joe Castiglione once again read an excerpt from “The Green Fields of the Mind,” the timeless essay by former president A. Bartlett Giamatti ’60, ’64PhD, that first appeared in our pages in 1977. (Read it here, and read about it here.) This cover photo of Giamatti appeared in our December 1989 issue, just after his death.
