Throwback Thursday: accommodations

Fifty years ago, after the city of New Haven blocked Yale from building two new residential colleges, the university scrambled to find other solutions to overcrowding. When it was reported that administrators were thinking of housing undergrads in the Holiday Inn on Whalley Avenue (now a Courtyard by Marriott), wags at the alumni magazine asked Mark Ellis ’71MArch to reimagine the hotel as “Whalley College” with a few modifications. The resulting photomontage appeared in our June 1973 issue.
