Yale has added another piece of New Haven’s Broadway retail district to its portfolio. The university recently bought the buildings at 51 and 57 Broadway from a private partnership for $7 million. Some alumni will remember 57 Broadway as the home of the York Square Cinema and 51 as the Educated Burgher. The buildings currently house Campus Customs, Broadway Kitchen, Blue Jay Cleaners, and the cosmetics store Bluemercury. Like other nonacademic properties owned by Yale, these will stay on the city’s tax rolls. With this acquisition, Yale owns all the retail property on the block except 21 Broadway, home of Junzi Kitchen.
