Throwback Thursday: GALA's early days

Happy Pride Month! In February 1984, the Yale Alumni Magazine published a simple half-page ad purchased by the relatively new group Yale Gay and Lesbian Alumni. It's hard to imagine this as a controversial act today, but we received some angry letters in response—and then some encouraging ones. (The final tally was 73 supportive, 28 hostile.) The ad and the sharp response drew national attention from newspapers, which proved a boon for Yale GALA. “The advertisement provoked more people to come out of the closet and realize there is no longer any reason to be ashamed,” said John Leo ’65 at a GALA conference later that year.
