Throwback Thursday: summer in the city

Forty years ago this summer, Yale launched its first summer session as a closely watched experiment. As we reported in our October 1975 issue, 380 Yale undergrads and 180 students from other colleges signed up for the 10-week term, and the reviews were generally positive. The Yale Daily News—which published as a weekly that summer—did grumble that the summer term was “not a whole Yale” since students "produced only one play, invited no speakers, held no club meetings, and fielded no athletic teams.” (The Cross Campus volleyball game shown here was a more casual affair.) But as one student told the alumni magazine, “it was extraordinarily relaxing not to have to choose among dozens of things to do.” The summer session now attracts more than 1,200 students from Yale and elsewhere.
