And you thought Garry Trudeau made all this up? Forty-five years ago, our January 1971 issue described for alumni the inner workings of a handful of communes in the Yale community—accompanied by photos like this one, regrettably uncaptioned. Author Frederick Poorbaugh ’70MDiv, himself a member of a commune at the time, explained that “some communes go little beyond co-op apartments, offering only a few common meals and rooms. Others take their life together more seriously and regard working out their communal lifestyle as their main goal. Still other communes orient their common life toward a goal beyond themselves.”
