Throwback Thursday: going deepIn our January 17, 1936, issue, we reported on legendary swimming coach Bob Kiphuth’s latest innovation. Over his 42 years as coach, Yale amassed a 528–12 record and won four national championships. It was often said—as in this caption—that Kiphuth couldn’t swim. But although he had no experience with the sport before becoming Yale’s coach, the claim that he was a strict landlubber was “a canard,” according to a 1946 New York Times article. “Actually, he gets around in the water pretty well,” the Times reported. We regret the error.
