Give us a ring

Throwback Thursday: fifty years ago this summer, workers spent three months installing 44 new bells in Harkness Tower to upgrade the existing chimes to a full-fledged 54-bell carillon. The undergraduate bell ringers—who were themselves upgraded to carillonneurs—were enthusiastic. As one of them said in our October 1966 issue, “There’s no greater thrill than disturbing the Yale community with 28 tons of ear-shattering noise.”
