Among the many monuments built into Yale’s Memorial Quadrangle—now Branford and Saybrook Colleges—is this one in Branford Court. If your Latin is as rusty as ours, Robert Dudley French’s 1929 book on the quadrangle offers an explanation: “During a shortage of labor a number of undergraduates, who were working their way through college, seized the opportunity to earn a little money by working as day laborers.” French says the carving is “a reminder that among the first men who lived in these buildings were some who had had a hand in making them.”
