Throwback Thursday: The good ship Yale

125 years ago this month, we reported on the military career of the USS Yale. The steamship, a passenger liner known before and after the Spanish-American War as the SS City of Paris, was drafted into service for four months in 1898 and named for the university. Yale students raised money to buy two guns—christened Eli and Handsome Dan—for the ship.
