Painter John Trumbull was born on this day in 1756. Known for his portraits and scenes related to the American Revolution, Trumbull sold many of those paintings to Yale as the nucleus of its art gallery in 1832. A condition of the sale was that Trumbull and his wife were to be buried beneath the paintings. Their remains have been moved twice along with the paintings.
