The pioneering scientist and Yale professor Josiah Willard Gibbs (1839–1903) may not be a household name, but he has had a long list of fans—including Albert Einstein, who called him “the greatest mind in American history.” He is still admired today, judging from the tributes left on his grave marker at Grove Street Cemetery. On a recent visit, they included currency from China and Brazil—and a Starbucks gift card.
