Throwback Thursday: shattering the glass doghouse ceilingFifty years ago, in our April 1975 issue, we celebrated the ascension of Handsome Dan XII, Yale's first (and so far only) female mascot. Known as Bingo, the new Dan belonged to history professor Rollin Osterweis ’30, ’46PhD (left), who told the magazine her selection was "my proudest moment as a Yale man." Athletics director Delaney Kiphuth ’41, ’47MA (right), was still skeptical, opining that "it's very hard to call a female dog Handsome Dan." But Bingo reigned for eight years, surviving a highly publicized dognapping by Princeton students in 1979.
