Our July 6, 1934, cover featured three presidents: Yale's James Rowland Angell, Harvard's James B. Conant, and president of the United States Franklin D. Roosevelt. Conant and Roosevelt were in New Haven to receive honorary degrees at Yale's commencement. Yale and Harvard traditionally award honorary degrees to each other's presidents soon after they take office, as Conant had in 1933. Yale has been pickier about conferring degrees on US presidents; FDR is one of 15 so honored. |
