Fifty years ago, this photo appeared in our May 1976 issue, accompanying a story about an archival find by three Yale students. First-years Carleton Ealy ’79, Joseph Johnson ’79, and Larry Kaufman ’79 were exploring the basement of Lawrance Hall—which was then under renovation—and discovered papers and correspondence belonging to Charles M. Bakewell (1867–1957), a Yale philosophy professor who later became a US congressman. Bakewell's papers, which included correspondence with William James and John Dewey, had been believed lost; they are now in the Yale archives. |
