Throwback Thursday: Elm City activism

Fifty years ago in our May 1966 issue,in an otherwise largely celebratory issue about urban renewal in New Haven, we featured Peter Countryman ’65, 66MA, and Joan Cannady Countryman ’66MUS, who had moved off campus to the Hill a year before to help organize the Hill Neighborhood Union. “We’re sort of a voice in the wilderness, because the city as a collectivity is convinced that it is doing a good job,” Peter Countryman said. “There is a great gap between the city’s public relations and its public achievements.”
